The premise of the popular Paleo diet is that if we would mimic the eating habits of our paleolithic predecessors, we would be healthier, less obese, and avoid ailments both big and small including conditions like anxiety, asthma, certain cancers, depression, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, and osteoporosis.

Today’s guest, Daniel Lieberman has studied extensively the habits of our ancestors. He’s a Harvard evolutionary biologist who has focused his research on  the human body and how it has evolved over millions of years. His book, The Story Of The Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease, examines the increasing disparity between the needs of our Stone Age bodies and the realities of the modern world. So even though we’re living longer, we’re living with chronic disease.

Belly fat is a topic that so many people are concerned about - mainly for cosmetic reasons. However, we know that having extra weight — especially around the belly — can be risky. It’s one of the main indicators that the body is shifting out of balance, and veering into some unhealthy territory.

Now, here’s the rub: belly fat cells contain four times more cortisol receptors compared with other cells. In other words, every time you raise cortisol levels, you just feed that muffin top and start to create a barrier that stops you from burning fat. So, if you’ve been asking yourself why it’s so freaking hard to manage belly fat, then you’re going to want to hear today’s guest: Dr. Sara Gottfried.

Dr. Sara Gottfried is a New York Times bestselling author. In her newest book, Younger, she created a protocol that can help you gain more control over the way you age than you ever thought possible. It’s a simple matter of turning the good genes on, and the bad genes off.

At 44, Dr. John Day was overweight and suffering from insomnia, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol and on six medications. He knew he needed to make a change. While lecturing in China, he heard about a remote mountainous area known as Longevity Village, which is a wellness Shangri-la free of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, dementia, depression and insomnia, where living past one hundred -- in good health-- is not uncommon.

In the hope of understanding this incredible phenomenon, Dr. Day, decided to spend some time in Longevity Village. He learned everything he could about this place and its people, and met its centenarians. His research revealed seven lessons that work in tandem to create optimal health. He applied these rules to his own life, and 6 months later, he’d lost thirty pounds, dropped on hundred points off his cholesterol and twenty-five points off his blood pressure, and was even cured his insomnia.

His new book is called The Longevity Plan and you can learn all about it in today's episode.

A few months ago, I was heading to a wedding in Malibu, driving with my friend Agapi. And once again, I had the pleasure of experiencing first-hand the “Agapi Magnetism,” which can only be explained as the ability to ignite a room with love and JOY the moment she walks in.

She lights up the space like pure sunshine.

Today, we're talking to Agapi about life, meditation, happiness... basically, a lot of stuff. So just tune in and stick around for a short, guided meditation.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. And yet, it’s one of the most preventable...through exercise!

Listen to this shocking fact: Treating a patient with heart disease costs more than $20,000 per year, per person. That means that the country could save almost $40 billion a year by just getting about 25% more Americans to exercise moderately. Those numbers are staggering!

Which is why I am thrilled to introduce you to a doctor who knows a lot about the heart. Dr. Aaron Baggish, M.D. He is the Director of the Cardiovascular Performance Program at the Mass General Hospital Heart Center in Boston. He’s also a doctor who knows a lot about the heart specifically as it relates to sports. Dr. Baggish is a medical director for the Boston Marathon and serves as team cardiologist for the New England Patriots, the Boston Bruins, the New England Revolution, the US Men's and Women's Soccer teams, and the US Rowing team. And if you have a favorite sports team that's not listed, don’t hold that against him! You’re still going to want to hear what he has to say about his ongoing research which focuses on heart function and heart disease in athletic individuals.

In this episode, you'll discover...

  • Is too much exercise bad for your heart?

  • What types of food are best for a strong heart?

  • What types of tests should young athletes get before they participate in high intensity sports?

Approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. And with each mammogram, most women have a fleeting thought about the possibility of getting a positive diagnosis.

On today’s show we have Dr. Susan Love. She's the author of the enormously popular Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book. Let's talk about something that's not often discussed...your hoo ha, cha cha, lady flower, va-jay-jay. Whatever you call it… it’s a fact, your vagina and its surrounding areas will undoubtedly change as time goes by. As you go through your 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, you’ll see that just like every other part of your body, your vagina is getting older.

Even though every woman, and every vagina, is different, there are some common transformations that happen with each decade. Because of the embarrassment or uncomfortable nature of discussing the topic, many times we’re typically uninformed and unprepared for the realities of our aging lady parts!

That’s about to change, because today’s podcast guest, Dr. Julie Reil is here to talk about how to keep everything “down there” healthy and active. Julie is an internationally recognized physician, women’s health and nutrition advocate, educational speaker, and Women’s Voice author.

Today, I’m so excited to have on the show a man who needs no introduction...the one and only Dr. Oz. He has won seven Daytime Emmy Awards for “The Dr. Oz Show” and is Professor of Surgery at Columbia University.

On this extraordinary episode, you'll learn:

  • What is the single biggest cause of aging?
  • What is the single most under-appreciated problem in America
  • What you can do on a daily basis can extend your healthspan (that period of life when you're free from disease and you're thriving.)
  • What's the next biggest trend in medicine?
  • Plus... Short on cash? Find out if buying organic produce really worth the extra money?

Recently, Dr. Oz was here in Park City, doing a little skiing, and helping launch the Blair Education Center and the new Park City LiVe Well Center…a beautiful new addition to the Park City Hospital. It really embodies the community’s commitment to preventing disease and promoting well-being.

He’s a true pioneer and champion in personal wellness, and his plan, The Regimen, is a daily checklist that shows you what to eat, what to take, and what to do to improve your health now!

The man has more vitality than the Energizer bunny, and when we spoke recently, he talked about his latest passion, and single most under-appreciated problem in America.

If you've been thinking adding more beans and leafy greens to your daily meals, or even tapping into your inner herbivore and swapping out meat completely, then this podcast episode is for you. This week, I speak with John Lewis. You may know him as the Badass Vegan. He commands the attention of everybody in a room with his 6-foot physique, toned arms, and smile the size of the sun.

After experiencing some health issues in 2004, John’s doctor suggested that excessive animal protein consumption just might be to blame. So he took on a 30-day NO-MEAT challenge, which was an unlikely move for a gym rat who played college basketball. Even though his friends and family weren’t convinced at first, after his 30-day experiment he felt better than ever. The rest is history.

Beyond his Badass Vegan nickname, John is an in-demand public speaker, personal trainer, and entrepreneur with a mission to bust traditional vegan stereotypes and educate the world about plant-based nutrition and eating more consciously. He’s been featured everywhere from Muscle & Fitness to Men’s Fitness, to Maxim and even Sports Illustrated. In fact, you might have seen him highlighted with my friend Tony Horton in a P90X TV ad.

What do you think it takes to get fit? Most people think that it takes a lot of time and a lot of hard work. Today’s guest disagrees.

Martin Gibala is a professor and the chair of the kinesiology department at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. In Martin’s new book, The One Minute Workout, he reveals the science and the history behind one of the most popular methods of working out: interval training.

Martin’s here to talk about how low can you go - meaning how little exercise you can do and still get results. Martin is being called a “guru” of interval training...even though it’s a label he’s a bit uncomfortable with. But once you read his book, you’ll be blown away with the science that’s showing how to get fit in a much smarter, faster and shorter way.

So if you’re one of the people who thinks they don’t have time to exercise, or you’re not getting results… then you’re going to want to listen up.

Today is all about toxins - what they are and and just how they’re derailing your health. The fact is that, at some point today, you’re going to be exposed to toxins. They’re in your personal care products, including cosmetics, they’re in your foods, including food coloring and artificial sweeteners, and they’re even in your common household items, like sealants in cookware and flame retardants in your clothes.

Lucky for us, today’s guest is the toxin guru - Dr. Joseph Pizzorno. He’s one of the world's leading authorities on science-based natural medicine and he’s the founder of Bastyr University...the first fully accredited, university of natural medicine. He has written and co-authored 12 books and publications, including his new book, The Toxin Solution, which is all about how hidden poisons in the air, water, food, and products we use are destroying our health.
