As a child, I had no problem sleeping through the noise of freight trains and marching bands, jet planes, and alarm clocks. For most of my adult life, too, I've been able to drop off immediately and fall into the most wonderful slumber. But occasionally, my mind wanders, leaving me staring at the ceiling. On nights like this, I've found a self-hypnotic relaxation technique that allows me to not only slip into dreamtime, but also sleep more deeply.

This is a simply a creative visualization method where you comfortably close your eyes, take your focus off the world, and live in your imagination. This is a time and a space that you’ve set aside for you, to focus the incredible power of your mind, to tap into the creative resources of your other-than-conscious mind.

Thirty years ago, when I wrote my first strength training book, one of the chapters was about testosterone. At the time, women were concerned about bulking up and looking too masculine and the most common complaint I heard about strength training was, “Kathy, I don't want to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger!” And my response was always, “OK. Beyond the eight hours a day you'd have to spend in the gym, women don't have enough testosterone to make those kind of strength gains.” So fast forward 30 years and now the discussion focuses much more on the benefits of testosterone - ones that go far beyond increased muscles and strength. I spoke with Dr. Tami Meraglia who is opening the dialogue on this misunderstood hormone in her best-selling book, The Hormone Secret. Her book provides you with a 30-day plan to help balance your hormones and renew your vitality.

One of my goals for 2017 is to ride across America. Now, you might be thinking yourself: “Kathy, you're absolutely crazy!” And, I probably am a little crazy - but, my mission has always been to inspire the best in people, to help them dream big and reach their goals. This ride across the country is simply the next step in that journey.

As soon as I set the fall 2017 date, I started hearing from people all across the country. The man that gave me the most confidence in my abilities to pull this whole thing off is today’s guest, Dr. Max Testa. Dr. Testa specializes in sports and exercise medicine from prevention, to diagnosis, and then to treatment. He's worked with professional cyclist and pro cycling teams for over 25 years and has participated in 17 Tour de France races. He even coached Lance Armstrong! Dr. Testa and I also serve on the advisory board at the LiVe Well Center in Park City, Utah. He’s a legend when it comes to giving advice on training, preventing injury, and accessing peak performance.

About 20 years ago, I started writing about the 3 F’s of fitness: formal, fun, and functional.  Formal is going to the gym or to a class. Fun is what it sounds like: running on the beach or doing a favorite activity, whether it’s going on a hike or swimming at the pool. And functional is fitting fitness into your everyday life.

When it comes to functional fitness, it’s all about the little itty bitty things you can do each day. I know, you’ve heard it hundreds of times - park further away from the store, catch up with your friends on a walk instead of sitting and chatting on the phone, and of course, take the stairs instead of the escalator!

So finding ways to move more throughout the day is the message and the mission of our next guest, Katy Bowman. She runs www.nutritiousmovement.com. You’re going to want to listen up because Katy has created a new movement vocabulary that is unique and original.

In my 35 years of being in the health and wellness business, I’ve experienced a lot of strategies for staying healthy and living longer. But none more convincing that what we’re going to be talking about today.

Today’s guest, Professor Valter Longo, is going to talk to us about the latest findings related to FMD - Fasting Mimicking Diets.

It appears that by periodically adopting a diet that mimics the effects of fasting may yield a host of positive effects on aging, organ function, and weight management.

Professor Valter Longo is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on prolongation of lifespan and longevity. His work and discoveries are labelled as some of the greatest achievements in science. He directs a laboratory of twenty researchers at the Andrus Gerontology Center, one of the oldest and leading centers for research on aging and age-related diseases in the country.

For over 20 years, he's been studying the complex mechanisms which control aging. He’s an award-winning researcher, gerontology and biological sciences professor and director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California. You can find out more about Fasting Mimicking Diets at www.l-nutra.com.

Today's guest is a woman who dares to be different. And what a life she’s had! Julia Child has made her breakfast. She’s been on a date with Woody Allen. And, if you look at the cover of her New York Times Best-Selling book, Find A Way, you’ll know why Bette Midler used to call her “Muscles.”

Her zest for life is infectious. We first met 25 years ago and, little did I know then, but when I saw this power-packed bundle of energy, vitality and pure goodness step on the stage, that she would eventually accomplish a seemingly impossible challenge. By completing her 40-year old dream to swim 110 miles from Cuba to Florida, in just under 53 hours, she became the ultimate champion. And along the way, she inspired us to feel like champions, and believe that we could accomplish anything we set our minds to.

And for her encore, she’s taking on an even bigger challenge -- stopping the obesity epidemic in this country. And you’re not going to believe how she’s going to do it… by walking across America. And she’s hoping to lure millions of Americans to join her team.

You can’t just wake up one day, snap your fingers, and then go pick up a gold medal -  becoming an Olympic champion at anything takes real time, energy, and sacrifice. Very few people commit themselves to that pursuit and even fewer achieve their dreams. Well, today, we have a U.S. Olympian with us to talk about the ups and downs of being a world class athlete.

Kate Grace qualified for the 2016 Olympics by winning the Women’s 800-meters at this year’s U.S. Olympic Trials and then reached the final of the 800-meters at the Olympics. Oh yeah! And she’s also my first daughter and I was able to travel to Rio and see her compete in an Olympic Final!

A few years ago I was at a wedding in Los Angeles, and one of the guests happened to be Lisa Kudrow who played Phoebe on the hit television series Friends. We were chatting about our professional and personal lives, and I was telling her about coming back from Chicago where I’d been shooting a video with today’s guest, Dr. Joe Mercola, about his newest type of stretching. As soon as I mentioned his name, everyone around me began asking me question after question about Joe and his philosophies. Just as there are people in the music business who are known by a single name - Madonna, Prince - in the world of health and wellness, there’s Mercola.

Dr. Mercola is a three time New York Times bestselling author, and he’s been at the forefront of awaking the nation to the dangers of GMOs in our food. He’s leading the charge in natural health with the number one most visited health website, mercola.com, with almost 10 million unique visitors every month. He’s timeless, fearless, and authentic through and through.

Bone broth has hit the mainstream recently and it’s being touted from athletes to nutritionists as a superfood. Bone broth bars are actually showing up all over the country! While it might seem new, from the time man discovered fire, they’ve been drinking bone broth. In fact, when I was a kid, we used to take the turkey bones from Thanksgiving dinner and throw it in a pot with carrots, onions, and seasonings - and what we were left with a yummy broth.

Our guest, Dr. Kellyann Petrucci, has all of the details on how best to use bone broth in our own diets. It’s her go-to drink for healing, wellness, anti-aging, and weightloss! Dr. Petrucci is a board-certified naturopathic physician and a certified nutrition consultant. She’s the author of the New York TImes Best-Selling Book, Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet. 25 years ago, I launched a campaign called Walk Fit, and during that time countless people told me how walking changed their lives. One woman went from a size 18 to a size six just by walking! It’s what I like to call the “no excuse” exercise: just throw on a pair of shoes and get outside or get on a treadmill. And brisk walking can do more than help you feel confident in your skin. Additional benefits include reduced body fat, lower blood pressure, and increased blood flow to the brain. This is why the health community calls walking — and all exercise — medicine.

Nobody knows this better than today’s guest, Dr. Bob Sallis. He serves as chairman for the Exercise is Medicine initiative, and has served as President of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Sallis travels across the globe promoting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, from elite athletes to people who simply need help getting off the couch. He is passionate about his message that everyone can get up, take a walk, and in turn change their lives.

Our habits and routines - many of which have become ingrained in our subconscious over the course of years - have a tremendous impact on our overall health and happiness. Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows that habits are a key component of weight loss (and that losing weight is not simply a calories in/calories out equation). Whether you wake up and start your day with green tea and meditation or coffee and a cigarette, we train ourselves to engage in certain routines, and it can be very challenging to break free from those routines. Enter this week’s guest, Dr. Patrick Porter, who has been on the cutting edge of brain wave training technology for over 28 years.

Through his Brain Tap Technology, Dr. Porter helps clients unlock their potential and break the detrimental habits they’ve become stuck with. Dr. Porter explains that our brains develop circuits which are “wired and fired” in response to a habit or routine; when a routine changes, our neurology experiences a missing at a cellular level and simply doesn’t know what to do. It is possible, however, to disrupt a routine by shaking up our physiology first (just as an athlete would do when preparing to practice or perform).

I have to admit: I was a sugar addict. I loved treats. My after-school ritual as a kid was diving into my mom’s drawer of store-bought chocolate cupcakes and cream-filled snack cakes, which started me on the road to a daily treat. I’ve modified my sugar intake throughout the years, as science has revealed that sugar has many negative effects on the body and the brain. But nothing changed my relationship with sugar more than today’s guest, JJ Virgin.

JJ is the author of the New York Times bestseller, The Virgin Diet, which topped the charts for over 30 weeks. Years ago, I caught an episode of a television show that JJ was hosting called Freaky Eaters, about people who ate bizarre things - a woman who smothered everything in maple syrup, for example - and as JJ explains, we all have a bit of a freaky eater within us.

Two years into Kathy’s first television show, something started happening with one of her eyes. Doctors were not sure what the issue was - bacteria? Some sort of infection? A clogged tear duct? Finally, a doctor at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA diagnosed Kathy with Graves Disease, a condition which was attacking her thyroid gland. This experience jumpstarted Kathy’s lifelong journey to understanding the remarkable thyroid and adrenal glands.

Today, we're talking about thyroids with one of the best! Today’s guest is Dr. Alan Christianson, New York Times best-selling author and naturopathic medical doctor (NMD) with a focus on thyroid disorders.
